Many professions, as well as entertainers and sports professionals, use stimulants. He was about to become very wealthy and a drug dealer was trying to get him hooked. I recall the first Robin Williams appearance on the Tonight Show where he was making fun of people using cocaine while he was doing it himself. It becomes quite obvious when people are UP all the time and others have to use the same substances to stay competitive.
